Wilbur African Lion MemorialWilbur was an older African lion that was at Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield Missouri for several years. He is the first African Lion my kids and I fell in love with. He had a good home and excellent medical care at Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield Missouri till he passed away at a ripe old age from cancer. His keepers cared for him and loved him right to the end. Here are some lion pictures of Wilbur the kids and I took back then. Actually Wilbur is one of the first animals on this website. I do love lions!! Lions are o much fun to watch. I can just set for hours watching them. I like the exhibits where they have room and things to do. I will NOT pay to see a lion in a tiny cage and you shouldn't either. If they can't make money displaying them in tiny cages then soon they will have to stop doing it.
Wilbur was born in 1989 and moved to Dickerson Park Zoo in November 1997. He liked dry grain specially formulated for lions. He also ate a prepared meat supplement. He loved his keepers and always greeted them Wilbur even enjoyed the visitors at the zoo. He would casually glance up and acknowledge that a visitor was there.
Did you know it takes about 5 years for the male lion's main to grow big and full? It takes about 1 year for a male lion to start growing his mane at all. Did you also know that a male's mane gets darker with as he gets older? See how very dark Wilbur's mane was. He was quite old for a lion.
An African Lion's mane helps protect them when they fight with other males or predators. In the wild where lions live in prides, the male lion's main job is to defend the pride's territory.
Oh, by the way, the roar of a male lion can be heard 5 miles away. We hope you will remember Wilbur the African Lion from Dickerson Park Zoo right here in Springfield Missouri. We as a family visiting the zoo really enjoyed watching Wilbur. So many zoos ship off animals when they become older. I am so glad the Dickerson Park Zoo kept Wilbur. He had a lot of character and my family would often run by the zoo after school just to watch him for an hour. Many days we didn't even go anywhere else in the zoo, just to see Wilbur.
