Information about the Cheetahs at Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield Missouri.
The four cheetah cubs at Dickerson Park Zoo are all females. Their names are "Bastet", "Sahara", "Akila", and "Nairobi". Tee Hee. It will take a while for us to figure out which one is which. You know watching them as many times as we have, they each have very distinct personalities. The cubs' mother's name is "Hatari" and she was born here at DPZ 26 May 1998. These cubs are her first litter. The cubs' father's name is "Kruger". "Kruger" came to DPZ 28 May 2002 from San Diego Wild Animal Park where he was born on October 2, 2000. This is also his first litter. There is also another adult female cheetah at Dickerson Park Zoo. Her name is "Aina" and she was born at Dickerson Park Zoo on December 6, 1996. "Aina" has not had any babies yet. She has the same mother and father as "Hatari". There is also another adult male cheetah, his name is "Oba". He came to Dickerson Park Zoo from Cincinnati Zoo on September 10, 2002. He was born at Toronto Zoo 14 June 1995. Cheetahs get moved around pretty often for breeding and cooperation with Species Survival Plan. Remember the cheetah is Critically Endangered, not just endangered. We here in the Springfield area are very blessed and thankful that Dickerson Park Zoo participates so successfully in the SSP for cheetahs. As we understand the current plans are to possibly keep the 2 adult females and "Kruger" for hopefully future breeding. Also the zoo may be keeping two of the cubs. Won't it be fun to watch them grow up and hopefully have babies at the zoo too? We would like to thank the Animal Records Keeper at Dickerson Park Zoo for so kindly providing us with this information. It is so much fun when you go to the zoo and feel like you 'know' the animals. We hope this website makes you feel that way too. Often while we are at the zoo taking photos and video, people ask questions about the animals. They love to know their names and hear their behaviors. They also seem to enjoy learning the information about the species. Folks often stand and ask more and more questions. So it is our sincerest hope that sharing all this information with you here will make your trips to the zoo more informative, enjoyable and memorable. We also hope you might consider adopting your favorite zoo.
