The California Gray Whale does not swim as fast as the Orca or Killer
Whale. The Orca or Killer whale can swim about 40 mph while the
California ray Whale swims about 5 mph with a top speed of about 10 mph. This
is a photo of two California Gray Whales. You can see the the lice and
barnacles on their heads. Gray whales have a gestation period of 13 months and
can sometimes have a baby every two years. They are old enough to begin
having babies at the age of 5 or 6 years. A baby California Gray Whale nurses
for about 7 months. A mother Gray Whale's milk is very high in fat. A
Gray Whale is about 10 to 16 feet long at birth and can grow to be up to 25
feet by the time they are a year old. A baby gray whale can gain 80 pounds a
day. A California Gray Whale can live to be about 55 to 60 years old. If you
ever get the chance to go whale watching in the San Diego California area, I
highly recommend the Hornblower California Gray Whale watching tour.
