The numbers of Cavies in Argentina are decreasing because of competition with the European hare. The European hare is not native to Argentina. However since it has been introduced there and reproduces faster than the Patagonian cavy and eats the same food, the numbers of Patagonian Cavies are decreasing. Another reason besides competing with the ever growing European hare population is that the habitat to compete for is continually getting smaller due to human civilization expansion.
