Dickerson Park Zoo was the FIFTH zoo in the whole entire Western Hemisphere to breed Asian elephants, with Portland Zoo being the first. 

In later pages of this web site we will tell you more about the highly respected Asian elephant breeding program at Dickerson Park Zoo.  It is a fascinating story how they got started from such meager beginnings  and achieved such a tremendous  success.  The Dickerson Park Zoo Asian elephant breeding program is known and respected world wide.

Learn the interesting facts about why so few zoos have gotten into the Asian elephant breeding programs and see why it is even more remarkable that a smaller zoo like Dickerson Park Zoo has achieved such marvelous success.

Maybe, if we hope really hard, we can even introduce you to the devoted, caring and very knowledgeable 'keepers' of the Asian elephants.  It takes a super staff to have reached the level of success with Asian elephants as Dickerson Park Zoo has reached..  

One of the keepers at Dickerson Park Zoo is so devoted to saving this endangered specie of elephants that he has been at Dickerson Park Zoo watching over the elephants for 25 years.  When he speaks of the elephants you can hear the pride and devotion ringing loud and clear.
