Pygmy marmosets are the smallest marmosets and one of the smallest of all
primates. They are often called the smallest monkeys in the world.
Pygmy Marmosets normally live to be about 8-11 years old.
Pygmy Marmosets have an average size of
Head and body length: 4.5 to 6 inches, Tail length: 17-22cm, Weight: 3to5
ounces.
A female Pygmy marmoset is usually a little bigger than the male.
Places you will usually find a Pygmy Marmoset are: South America, Brazil, Ecuador,
Columbia and
Peru
Pygmy Marmosets like to live in flooded forest areas like river edges,
near farming fields, and often around areas with a lot of bamboo.
Pygmy Marmosets have very good eyesight and can run very fast, too.
A Pygmy marmoset is know to be very curious and playful.
Pygmy Marmosets like to eat gum tree sap. They have long claws, long
incisor teeth and reduced canine teeth that help them to poke and bite holes in the trees and visit the same hole several times a day for more
sap. They also like to eat fruits. They have been know to eat lizards
and insects, too.
They make high pitch chirping sounds, and bird-like thrills
Mothers carry their young for approximately 115 to 145 days or about
4.5 to 5 months before the
babies are born. After the babies are born the daddy's carry the babies
for 6-8 weeks. Sometimes other family members in the group carries the
babies. The mothers take them back when it is time to feed them.
Pygmy Marmosets are capable of jumping about 5 meters. They jump
really fast and very accurately, too.
Pygmy Marmosets are diurnal and arboreal (ask your parents what that
means)
Pygmy Marmosets usually live in a group of 5-7 members.
The group is usually a mother, father and some of their offspring from current
and previous litters. Living in family units like this help the juveniles
learnt to be good parents.
Sometimes there can be 2 males but one is dominant.
A young Pygmy marmoset is usually considered an adult when they are
about 1.5 to 2 years old.
A Pygmy marmoset monkey has claws are helpful enabling them to
keep foothold on tree branches as as they run quickly along the branch
surface.
