Was This Tiger In YOUR Backyard? It Could Have Been!!This man dumped/abandoned his 400 pound 'pet' tiger in the woods near Harrison, Arkansas! This tiger had been raised to be dependant on humans then dumped in the woods to roam free to be hungry! How dangerous is that? That means when she got hungry she would look for a human to get food!! Aren't you glad you weren't hiking in those woods that day, with your family? Could this happen in YOU neighborhood? The poor tiger is not the one at fault. She was just dumped, alone and hungry. Tigers and other wildcats learn to hunt and survive from their mothers. Being raised in a home as a human's pet this animal would have no idea how to find food except to find a humane and expect food from them. The fault lies entirely with the irresponsible owner and the non-existent or not enforced laws. Is this an isolated incident? Could this be more common than you think? People often raise bobcats, lynx and mountain lions then dump them in the woods when they become not so cute a pet! The problem is those cats are indigenes to many areas in America so people don't realize they were once pets. The same thing applies though, they don't know how to live in the woods because they were raised by humans. they will look for humans to find food.! Why was that NOT a good idea? Tigers do not naturally know how to find, stalk, catch, kill and eat prey. They live with their mothers for over two years to be learn how to do that. If you take a full grown tiger who has been taught to depend on humans for all of her food and then dump her in the woods. She will begin looking for humans to feed her when she gets hungry. Yep, now you have a full grown, confused starving tiger looking for humans! These photos were taken from a newsletter from Turpentine Creek Wildlife Rescue!
After being dumped in the woods this tiger traveled 60 miles back home! That took this tiger right through or around Harrison Arkansas!! If you live in that area I would be furious! I would demand laws that would prevent people from buying 'pets' like this. Most people buying these kinds of pets haven't a clue what they are getting into. Usually it is the innocent animal who pays the price with his health or life. YOU or your child could have came face to face with this tiger in your own backyard!
The darker shaded line on the map depicts the distance India had to travel. I really do not believe she walked in a straight line. Notice the town of Harrison (pop. estimated at 40,000 people). India was fortunate to not be seen by a local farmer with a rifle. You were fortunate not to have had her in you yard looking to you for food! A female tiger in the wild normally has a territory of 400 square miles in which to hunt and roam!! That is an area about 11.3 miles in circumference! Was what this man did illegal? (In many states, nope) How much of a problem is this? HUGE (more commonly is with mountain lions, black bears and bobcats) Did he get in any trouble? (NOPE, not a bit)
Obviously this tiger has no fear of being near humans. All of her life she has lived in a house with humans and gotten her food from humans. She would NOT know how to hunt for deer etc.. for food. Very likely she would have gone looking for humans when she became very hungry! How was this irresponsible but typical owner so stupid as to not know that?! Just imagine hiking in the woods, playing in your own yard, walking down the driveway to the mailbox... and coming face to face with a 400 pound hungry tiger expecting food from you!! A tiger is 18 times as strong as a man! Your child in your backyard would not stand a chance. Normal reflex of a tiger is to attack if you run! What would be the first thing YOUR child would do? Probably run! Probably Die! Does this not outrage you?! It Should! Will you wait until you wake up to find a tiger in your backyard or a child you know is maimed or killed before you decide it is a problem? I AM outraged that someone would so carelessly dump a 'pet' tiger in the woods because he no longer wanted to keep it in his house!! This is a signal of a MUCH larger problem. People can easily buy pet tigers, lions, bears, cougars etc... because it really is EASY and accessible to do!! They do not stop and realize that for 20 years they are now responsible to feed and house a carnivore whose wild instincts will never go away. In fact as the animal matures they will become more prevalent. They think a cute cuddly cub can be raised to be a good pet, if they raise it right! But they cannot!! They become 700 pound adults that are 18 times stronger than a human. They require more meat per week than my entire family eats in 2 months!! When this cute cuddly cub becomes a hard to handle and too expensive to feed as an adult they become unwanted!! However, there are very few ways to get rid of this unwanted 'pet'. Most zoos will not take the 'pets' because they cannot be sure of the pedigree. NOW is where the real trouble starts!! There is nowhere to get rid of them. people don't want to buy adult exotic cats! Sanctuaries are full!! Finding one that can take in your now grown and unwanted 'pet' is next to impossible! So people sell them to people who shoot them in the cage!! Or they do what this 'man' did. Dump that unwanted 'pet' in the woods! Turpentine Creek is Eureka Springs Arkansas took this cat in, thankfully, or the man may very well have dumped her farther from his home and closer to YOUR home next time! Turpentine Creek & Big Cat Rescue and ALL other sanctuaries are full to the brim with unwanted 'pets' just like this tiger. They now must build her a home! Where is the money to do that to come from? The man that dumped her is not bound by any law to help support her! The government does not help support her! It is up to private donations to support her and pay for her a new home! The idiots who breed and sell these TONS of exotic pets are not required by any law to help support sanctuaries. Sanctuaries where the animals that they bred and made money from selling often end up!! THAT is not right! By the way, this man got this tiger from a breeder in Lampe, Missouri!! In case you wonder where that is... it is near Branson, Missouri! & Kimberling City! Contact Branson, Missouri and Kimberling City, Missouri's city officials and tell them to put pressure on to get rid of those breeders or YOU will NOT vacation in that area until they do! That is Stone County and Taney County. I bet if YOU start letting them hear you will NOT vacation around Branson anymore until they get rid of the tiger breeder in Lampe Missouri that they will soon begin taking action. Because it is legal to breed and sell these animals, uncontrolled, it is a much bigger issue for all of us than our politicians recognize!! We cannot expect the politicians to do anything about it until we the people start speaking up loudly and clearly! These breeders do not keep pedigrees so zoos cannot take the animals when 'pet' owners no longer want them. Often these animals are inbred and are very unhealthy. They breed more and more, sell more and more.. AND (I doubt they pay income taxes on all they sell) but no one seems to make public the issues that happen when those cute cuddly cubs become adults!! They make all the money and get off free and clear while the sanctuaries are left to foot the bill alone for caring for these 'unwanted pets'. This STINKS that it is legal!! Why do so many of our law makers refuse to address this issue? Bills continually die because of apathy on the part of our lawmakers!! Are they blind, lazy, too busy or just plain ignorant?? OR could it be because the public does not see it as an issue they do not convey it to our politicians that they want the issue addressed?? TAKE ACTION!! Speak out, be heard!! Does not what this man did make you wish we had better laws protecting our families from such stupid acts??! YOU can take actions to MAKE your politicians acknowledge this issue!! Nothing will change to prevent incidents like this from being repeated over and over unless EACH of us takes the responsibility to tell our politicians to "wake up and see the tiger in my backyard"!! This is NOT an isolated incident!I have been emailing politicians in Missouri to take a look at this issue! Out of the TONS of emails I have sent out repeatedly, ONLY ONE politician in the WHOLE state of Missouri has bothered to email be back!! WHY? Maybe if that tiger had showed up in THEIR backyard face to face with their child they would listen!! Must we wait for such a disaster before we / they act? Again, this is NOT an isolated incident in our area!!! Missouri even has one of the largest exotic pet auctions! WHY? Because our law makers do nothing to change it! WHY! Because we as the citizens do not 'see' the problem and speak out about it! You're dealing with animals, even animals raised from the earliest ages by people, that still have the potential to act like wild animals.. After all they ARE wild animals. "One can attempt to 'socialize' or 'tame' a wild animal by raising that animal among humans," .... "However, that is not domestication, and despite this social interaction, wild animals will always possess their natural instincts and can and will use them at any given time." Are you going to wait until there is a tiger in YOUR backyard or until YOUR child is eaten for lunch before YOU speak out!!??!! The more unscrupulous breeders are allowed to breed and sell cute cuddly cubs with no responsibility for where those animals end up this problem will continue to grow! Excuse me, this TICKS me off! Wake up people! Wake up your law makers!! This IS serious! YOU could find YOUR family face to face with a hungry tiger that is not afraid of humans on your next hike!! Hmmm YOU or YOUR child might become lunch for some dumped 'pet'! www.BigCatRescue.org An accredited sanctuary in Tampa, Florida. This is an amazing place. I would go there every week if I could!!! I had the joy of being there for an entire week doing up photos from daylight till dark everyday for a whole week! Oh my what a magnificent experience!! Sad Sigh, Florida is too far away to visit very often for me. They even have had requests to take in unwanted 'pets' from Missouri. How large must this problem be in Missouri if people are having to go as far away as Florida to find a home for their now grown and unwanted 'pet'. On their website you will find an automated system for emailing your politicians!! http://capwiz.com/bigcatrescue/issues/?style=D& USE IT!! Make a difference!! It is set up so it requires NO effort! Adults PLEASE use it to help make a change in laws! They even help you understand the laws! If you want to know more about the above story contact the
sanctuary below. It is only a two hour drive from Springfield. Nice roads and
a very scenic drive! You really should visit a sanctuary to fully understand this issue!
Visiting a sanctuary is an eye opening experience for the whole family! DO IT!
You will see this is a very common problem! Your heart will be touched! There is a tiger breeding facility in Lampe, Missouri MUST you wait until YOUR child becomes your neighbor's 'pet's' lunch before you decide to call or write your law makers??!!
