Patience An Asian Elephant Cow at Dickerson Park Zoo
Meet Patience, one of the Asian elephant cows at Dickerson Park Zoo Springfield, Missouri. Learn about how she has been a successful part of the Asian elephant breeding program at Dickerson Park Zoo. Patience was born in Thailand in 1974. She came to Dickerson Park Zoo on October 30th, 1990. Patience is a valuable part of Dickerson Park Zoo's great success with Asian elephants. The residents of Springfield Missouri are proud of 'their zoo" and its Asian elephant program. While participating in the Asian elephant program at Dickerson Park Zoo Patience had a calf named Kala on May 17, 1998. Kala went to live at Six Flags Marine World in Vallejo, California where she died on November 30, 2000. The same treatment that was used successfully on Chandra was tried, however it was unsuccessful for Kala. In the wild Asian elephants live in a matriarchal family group of related females and also young males and babies called a herd. Young elephants follow their mothers or older sisters by holding on to their tails. In an Asian elephant herd they live by social rules and interact much humans with their family members. They help help to feed, teach and protect each other's babies. The herds are often led by the oldest and largest female in the herd. The younger elephants learn from her vast knowledge about where to find food and water, and what paths to take. Etc... Asian elephants are quite social. Cows form stable herds of about 20 or more of their female relatives. Herds may temporarily break up into smaller subgroups, which maintain contact through low frequency long-distance vocalizations. Larger Asian elephant herds consist of 8 to 100 individuals. Males may be associated with a herd, solitary or may live temporarily with other males. Asian elephants produce a variety of sounds including low frequency calls, high pitched calls and loud trumpeting. A photo of Asian elephant cows CC and Patience playfully posing for the camera.
