Sabu Asian Elephant Bull at Dickerson Park Zoo
Meet Sabu, one of the Asian elephant bulls at Dickerson Park Zoo Springfield, Missouri. Sabu was born in the state of Perak in 1988. He was donated to the Cincinnati Zoo from the Malaysian Wildlife Department in 1991. The residents of Springfield were thrilled on September 10th, 2002 when Sabu came to live at Dickerson Park Zoo. The residents of Springfield Missouri have big dreams and hopes for Sabu to continue in the successful foot prints of Big Mac. The Asian elephant is one of the largest land mammals on Earth. Males can weigh up to 11,900 pounds! Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) stand eight to ten feet tall at the shoulders and have humped backs, domed foreheads, small ears, and a single prehensile "finger" on the tips of their trunks. Asian elephants are more easily tamed than their larger African counterparts, and have been used as beasts of burden for centuries. Remember, The Asian Elephant is an endangered specie. So breeding programs like the one at Dickerson Park Zoo are vital.
