Why has this happened? Well some versions of windows XP were released without a Java Virtual Machine plug-in because Microsoft had been using one made by Sun Microsystems and releasing it as part of Microsoft Internet Explorer. However they were not paying Sun Microsystems.  Sun sued Microsoft. So Microsoft removed it from internet explorer and since they did not have one of their own ready the earlier versions of Windows XP was released without the plug-in. Later Microsoft made their own Java Virtual Machine plug-in so later versions of windows were released with the  plug-in built in.

I had the same problem on my laptop. Downloading the Java Virtual Machine Plug-in and following the simple install fixed the problem.  Now I can play not only my games but other things on the internet work now.
